A Shocking Statement From Tun Hanif

Assalamualaikum,
As I was reading the Singapore's Straits Times report dated 19/Jun/99 on Anwar Ibrahim sodomy trail, I was shock to read what MALAYSIA'S then-police chief Tun Hanif Omar had to say about working in a company involving gambling. Below is the excerpt :

Defence lawyers failed to dismiss the testimony as  hearsay and prejudicial to their client, but in cross examination put Anwar's side of the story to Tun Hanif for the first time.

Counsel Christopher Fernando contended that the former top cop harboured a grudge against Anwar because the then Finance Minister had urged him not to accept a corporate position with Genting Bhd.

"I put it to you that Anwar told you that as a Muslim and a former IGP you cannot accept a directorship in a company involved in gambling," Mr Fernando said.

Tun Hanif, who is the current deputy chairman of Genting, as well as a director of a number of other big companies such as Binariang, Arab Malaysia Holdings and several Renong companies, replied: "In reading the Quran, as I understand it, there is no such prohibition."

Mr Fernando then put to the witness that "you said to the accused that I cannot decline this offer as they're  going to pay me RM50,000 a month in director's fees".

As a Muslim, I'm sure that it is HARAM (prohibited) to work in a company that involved in gambling. I'm shock that a learned Muslim such as Tun Hanif thinks otherwise. Can anyone with Islamic knowledge in this area kindly advise?

Thanks & Salam to all.
